Better Quality Pictures in 5 Steps [iPhone & Android]

Are you tired of taking blurry, poorly composed photos with your cell phone? Do you want to up your photography game and start taking better quality pictures? Look no further!

In this article, I’ll provide you with five simple yet effective steps you can take to improve the quality of your cell phone photos.

From making sure your lens is clean to experimenting with different focus modes, these tips will help you capture stunning, high-quality images that you’ll be proud to share with the world. Let’s dive in!

Clean Your Lens

Why?

Smudges and fingerprints on your lens can severely degrade the quality of your photos. Smudges cause what would be a sharp, clear image to turn out fuzzy and blurry. Simply cleaning your lens before snapping a photo will almost always result in better quality pictures.

How?

Here are a couple of ways you can clean a camera lens:

Use a microfiber cloth. If you don’t have a lens cleaning cloth handy, you can use a microfiber cloth to gently clean your lens. Just be sure to use a gentle, circular motion and avoid applying too much pressure, as this could potentially scratch the lens.

Use a lens cleaning cloth. These are specially-designed cloths that are made to gently clean camera lenses without scratching or damaging them. Simply wipe the cloth across the surface of the lens in a circular motion to remove any dirt, smudges, or fingerprints.

Use a lens cleaning solution. If your lens is particularly dirty or has stubborn smudges, you can use a lens cleaning solution to help break up and remove the dirt. Simply apply a small amount of the solution to a lens cleaning cloth and wipe the lens in a circular motion. Be sure to use a solution that is specifically designed for camera lenses, as other types of cleaning agents could damage the lens coating. If you find yourself using your phone for photography a lot, consider investing in a quality solution and lens cloth to keep with you.

Gridlines & The Rule of Thirds

What?

The rule of thirds is a basic principle of photography that suggests that an image can be divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines.

Why?

According to the rule of thirds, you should position the subject of your photo along one of these lines, or at the intersection of them, to create a more balanced and visually appealing composition.

How?

Here’s how to turn on the gridlines on an iPhone:

  1. Open the “Settings” app.
  2. Tap “Camera.”
  3. Toggle the switch next to “Grid” to the “On” position.

And here’s how to turn on the gridlines on an Android:

  1. Open the “Camera” app.
  2. Tap the “Settings” icon (usually represented by a gear or three dots).
  3. Tap “Grid lines.”
  4. Tap “On.”

Note that the specific steps may vary slightly depending on the make and model of your Android device.

Here’s how you can use the rule of thirds in practice:

  1. Turn on the gridlines in your camera app (refer to the instructions above on how to do this).
  2. When composing your shot, try to align the subject of your photo with one of the gridlines or their intersection points. For example, if you’re taking a photo of a person, try to position their eyes along one of the horizontal gridlines.
  3. Take the photo.

Use The Highest Resolution

By default, many phone cameras are set to take photos at a lower resolution to save space on your device. However, you can usually adjust the settings to take photos at a higher resolution, which will result in better quality images.

Why?

Resolution is an important factor in photography because it determines the level of detail that is captured in an image. The higher the resolution, the more detail is captured and the sharper the image will appear. Conversely, the lower the resolution, the less detail is captured and the blurrier the image will appear.

Resolution is typically measured in pixels. A pixel is a single point in a digital image, and the more pixels an image has, the higher its resolution will be. For example, an image that is 2000 pixels wide by 1000 pixels tall has a resolution of 2000 x 1000, or 2 megapixels (MP).

In general, higher resolution images are preferred because they can be printed at larger sizes or cropped more tightly without losing too much detail. Higher resolution images take up more space on your device and may require more processing power to edit, but you will end up with much better quality pictures.

How?

Here’s how to adjust the photo resolution settings on an iPhone:

  1. Open the “Settings” app.
  2. Tap “Camera.”
  3. Tap “Formats.”
  4. Select “Most Compatible” to take photos at the highest resolution your device is capable of. Alternatively, you can select “High Efficiency” to take photos at a lower resolution but with a smaller file size.

And here’s how to adjust the photo resolution settings on an Android:

  1. Open the “Camera” app.
  2. Tap the “Settings” icon (usually represented by a gear or three dots).
  3. Tap “Resolution & Quality.”
  4. Select the desired resolution and aspect ratio for your photos.

Note that the specific steps and options may vary slightly depending on the make and model of your Android device.

Add More Light

Good lighting is important in cell phone photography because it can significantly impact the quality of your photos.

Why?

Proper lighting can help to eliminate shadows, reduce harsh highlights, and bring out the colors and details in your photos. On the other hand, poor lighting can result in dull, flat, or poorly exposed photos.

How?

Turn on more lights! Get the scene as bright as you can with what you have.

If you are in a situation that does not allow you to turn more lights on, use flash. While not particularly visually appealing, a photo taken with flash looks much better than a dark blurry photo taken without.

Edit Your Photos

After you take a photo, you can use a photo editing app to make adjustments such as adjusting the brightness, contrast, and color balance.

Why?

Editing your photos and making minor adjustments can help you improve the overall quality of your photos and make them look more professional.

How?

Here are a few ways you can edit your cell phone photos to improve their overall quality:

  1. Adjust the brightness and contrast. You can use the brightness and contrast sliders in a photo editing app to adjust the overall tonality of your photo. Increasing the brightness can help to make a photo appear more vibrant and well-lit, while increasing the contrast can help to make the colors in the photo appear more pronounced.
  2. Adjust the color balance. The color balance of a photo refers to the relative warmth or coolness of the colors. You can use the color balance sliders in a photo editing app to adjust the overall color balance of your photo. For example, you can warm up a photo by increasing the amount of red and yellow tones, or cool it down by increasing the amount of blue tones.
  3. Sharpen the image. Sharpening can help to make the details in your photo appear more defined and crisp. Most photo editing apps have a sharpen tool that you can use to adjust the amount of sharpening applied to your photo.
  4. Remove blemishes or distractions. If there are blemishes, distractions, or other unwanted elements in your photo, you can use the clone tool in a photo editing app to remove them. The clone tool allows you to sample a part of the photo and “paint” it over the unwanted element.
  5. Apply filters. Filters are pre-set adjustments to the colors, contrast, and other properties of a photo. You can use filters in a photo editing app to give your photo a specific look or feel. For example, you can use a black and white filter to give your photo a vintage look, or a warm filter to give it a cozy, romantic feel.

By using these and other editing techniques, you can instantly get better quality pictures from your iPhone or Android camera.

Have Professional Photos

There are several reasons why a couple may want to have professional photos taken as opposed to using photos taken with a cellphone. Some of these reasons include:

It’s a special occasion. Dressing up for a couples photoshoot is a way to celebrate and make the experience feel extra special. It’s an opportunity to put effort into your appearance and feel confident and attractive.

It’s a chance to try something new. A couples photoshoot is a great opportunity to try out a new look or style that you might not normally wear. You can have fun experimenting with different types of clothing, makeup, and accessories and seeing how they look on camera.

It’s a memorable experience. Dressing up for a photoshoot is a fun and memorable activity that you can look back on in the future. It’s a chance to create a special memory with your significant other and have a unique and enjoyable experience together.

A Thoughtful & Unique Gift

Booking a couples photoshoot as a gift for your significant other is a thoughtful and unique way to show your love and appreciation.

A photoshoot is a special experience that you can enjoy together, and the resulting images will serve as a reminder of your love and connection. It’s a gift that can be treasured for years to come, and can be displayed in your home to share with loved ones.

Plus, the process of planning and preparing for the photoshoot can be a fun and exciting activity in and of itself, making it a truly memorable and meaningful gift.

Have Something To Look Back On

A couples photoshoot is a great way to have something special to look back on in the future and remember this time in your relationship.

As you go through life, it’s natural to experience changes and transitions. It can be nice to have professional photos to look back on and remember the people and moments that were important to you.

A couples photoshoot allows you to document your relationship at a particular moment in time.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are many reasons why a couple should book a photoshoot. From celebrating important milestones to capturing memories of your relationship at a specific moment in time, a couples photoshoot is a unique and meaningful way to document and celebrate your love.

It’s also a fun and memorable experience that you can both enjoy together, and the resulting images will serve as a lasting reminder of your relationship. So why wait?

Becoming a Photographer in 5 Steps [2023]

Are you interested in turning your love of photography into a full-time career? Becoming a professional photographer requires a mix of technical skills, artistic talent, and business savvy. Here are five steps to help you get started on your journey to becoming a successful photographer:

1. Get an education

While a formal education is not strictly necessary to become a photographer, it can be very helpful in terms of learning about the technical aspects of the trade and getting experience with a variety of equipment. Many schools offer degree programs in photography, and taking classes or earning a degree can also help you to network with other professionals in the field.

There are many modern ways to get an education in photography, including:

Online courses. There are a variety of online courses and programs available that cover a range of photography topics, from the basics of composition to advanced techniques like portrait lighting and post-processing. Online courses can be a convenient and flexible option for busy photographers.

Workshops and seminars. Many professional photographers offer workshops and seminars that allow you to learn new skills and techniques in a hands-on environment. These events can be a great way to learn from experienced professionals and get personalized feedback on your work.

Photography schools. Traditional photography schools offer degree programs and individual classes in photography and related subjects. Attending a photography school can provide a more structured and comprehensive education, and can also give you the opportunity to network with other students and professionals.

Books and tutorials. There are many books and tutorials available that can help you learn about photography and improve your skills. These resources can be a useful supplement to other forms of education, and can be especially helpful if you prefer to learn at your own pace.

Apprenticeships and internships. Apprenticeships and internships can be a great way to get hands-on experience and learn from experienced professionals. Many photographers are willing to take on interns or assistants to help with various tasks, and this can be a valuable learning opportunity.

2. Build a Portfolio

A portfolio is a collection of your best work that showcases your style and abilities as a photographer. As you build your portfolio, try to include a range of subjects and styles to demonstrate your versatility and range as a photographer.

Here are some steps you can follow to build a strong photography portfolio:

Select your best work. Choose only your best and most representative photographs to include in your portfolio. It’s better to have a smaller number of high-quality images than a large number of mediocre ones.

Consider your target audience. Think about who you want to show your portfolio to, and select images that will appeal to them. For example, if you are targeting wedding photography clients, you will want to include a mix of candid, formal, and artistic shots that showcase your ability to capture special moments.

Choose a portfolio format. There are many different ways to present your portfolio, including physical prints, online galleries, and PDFs. Consider the pros and cons of each option and choose the one that best fits your needs.

Organize your images. Arrange your images in a logical and visually appealing way. You might consider organizing them by theme, by date, or by location.

Edit and retouch your images. Make sure that your images are well-exposed, color-corrected, and free of blemishes or distractions. You might want to use photo editing software to touch up your images and make them look their best.

Write a bio and include contact information. Include a short bio that introduces yourself and your work, and make sure to include your contact information so that potential clients can get in touch with you.

Get feedback. Show your portfolio to other photographers, art directors, or other industry professionals and ask for their feedback. They may be able to offer helpful suggestions for improvement or areas where you can focus your efforts.

3. Find Your Niche

Many photographers choose to specialize in a particular type of photography, such as portrait, landscape, or wedding photography. Identifying your area of expertise can help you to focus your efforts and build a strong reputation within a specific niche.

Here are some ways to develop a niche in photography:

Identify your interests and passions. Think about what you enjoy most about photography and what types of subjects or styles you are most drawn to. This can help you to identify a niche that aligns with your interests and passions.

Network with other professionals. Connecting with other professionals in your niche can help you to learn from their experiences and build relationships that can lead to new opportunities. Consider joining professional organizations or attending industry events to meet other photographers and build your network.

Develop a Unique Style. Edit your work consistently. Consistency is key when it comes to developing a unique style. By editing your work in a consistent way, you can help to define your style and make it more recognizable. Don’t try to copy the styles of other photographers or force your work to fit into a particular mold. Instead, focus on developing a style that feels authentic and true to your own vision.

4. Learn the Business

As a photographer, you will be running your own business, so it’s important to have a basic understanding of things like marketing, pricing, and contracts.

Here are a few ways you can learn about the business aspect of photography:

Take business classes. Many community colleges and universities offer business classes that can help you learn the basics of running a small business, such as marketing, pricing, and financial management.

Consult with a mentor. Consider seeking out a mentor who is an experienced photographer and can offer guidance and advice on the business side of the industry.

Join a professional organization. Many professional organizations offer resources and support for photographers, including information on the business side of the industry. Consider joining an organization like the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

Read books and articles. There are many books and articles available that cover the business side of photography. Reading these resources can help you to learn about topics such as pricing, marketing, and financial management.

Attend workshops and seminars. Many professionals offer workshops and seminars that cover the business side of the industry, as well as technical skills. Attending these events can be a great way to learn from experienced professionals and get practical advice.

5. Continue to Learn & Grow

The world of photography is constantly evolving. It’s important to stay up to date with the latest techniques and technology. Attend workshops and seminars, join professional organizations, and be open to trying new things in order to continue to grow as a photographer.

Here are a few ways to continue to grow as a photographer:

Keep learning. There is always more to learn in the field of photography, whether it’s learning about new techniques, exploring different styles, or staying up to date with the latest equipment. Consider taking classes, attending workshops and seminars, or reading books and articles to continue to expand your knowledge.

Experiment with new subjects and styles. Don’t be afraid to try new things and push your boundaries as a photographer. Experimenting with different subjects and styles can help you to develop your skills and find new ways to express yourself.

Network with other photographers. Connecting with other photographers can be a great way to learn from their experiences, get inspiration, and find new opportunities. Consider joining professional organizations or attending industry events to meet other photographers and build your network.

Practice, practice, practice – As with any skill, the more you practice, the better you will become. Make time to shoot regularly, and be open to trying new things. Take on new challenges to help you continue to grow as a photographer.

Conclusion

In summary, becoming a professional photographer requires a combination of technical skills, artistic talent, and business savvy. By getting an education, building a strong portfolio, finding a niche, learning about the business side of photography, and continuing to grow and learn, you can set yourself up for success in this rewarding field. Don’t be afraid to take risks, try new things, and seek out feedback and guidance along the way. With dedication and hard work, you can turn your passion for photography into a fulfilling and successful career.

Top 5 BEST Cameras for Photography [2023]

What are the best cameras for photography? The best camera for one person is not always the best option for another. In 2023 there are hundreds of options, but these are the best for you based on your lifestyle.

To keep it simple, I have broken down this list into categories.

Travel Photography

If you want a camera that packs small into luggage, backpacks, and can even fit in your pocket, then this category is for you. My pick for the best camera for travel photography is the FujiFilm X100V.

FujiFilm X100V

This little beast of a camera will run you nearly $2k, but don’t let that scare you. Every other camera on this list consists of a body with a separate lens. This is a fixed lens camera. One lens for everything. After you pay the initial cost, that’s it. No additional lenses.

This camera is next level. The X100V features snappy mechanical external controls, film-stock presets in-camera, crystal clear viewfinder, and a sharp 23mm f/2.0 fixed lens. All of that is packed into a ruggedly-solid, camera that is only around 5″x3″x2″.

This is truly a travel photographers dream.

Low-Light Photography

Anyone who shoots primarily at night knows the struggle of pushing high ISO and getting back a grainy picture.

Luckily, camera manufacturers have been putting a lot of effort into improving the low-light performance of their flagship products.

Anyone who knows cameras knows that when it comes to low-light, Sony is king. My pick for the best low-light camera in 2022 is the Sony A7S III

Sony A7S III

That zero-grain low-light photography does not come without the price tag, though. Running almost $3,500, this camera is not recommended for beginners. This is truly a professional camera.

Wildlife Photography

Photographing wildlife is a beast of its own. I commend everyone with enough patience to do it.

With wildlife photography, you need a camera that supports great telephoto lenses, and can shoot in very high speed bursts.

You can’t risk not capturing the next cover of National Geographic because your gear wasn’t up to par. That is why my pick for the best camera for wildlife photography is the OM System OM1 Mirrorless Camera.

OM System OM1

At just over $2,000, this camera does everything a wildlife photographer will need it to do and more.

This camera features incredible stabilization, a continuous mechanical shooting rate of 10fps, and shoots 4K video at 60fps.

General Photography

For this category, general photography consists of family photography, pet photography, newborns, weddings, etc. You get the idea. If you just need a camera that can take great pictures, this is the category for you.

My top pick for an all-around fantastic camera is the Canon EOS RP.

Canon EOS RP

Probably the most affordable of Canon’s mirrorless line, the Canon EOS RP does what you need it to do, and very well.

At just $999 at the time of writing, this camera would be a great upgrade for anyone currently shooting with any of Canon’s older DSLRs.

The only con to this as an upgrade is that this camera utilizes an entirely different line of lenses. If this is a deal breaker for you, check out Canon’s new 90D.

Beginner Photography

If you are just starting off with photography and looking to make the move to get a nice camera, this is your category.

Keeping my pick under $1,000, I have to go with the Canon 80D.

Canon 80D

You can no longer buy this camera new, but that is more than okay. Buying a used camera is the best way to get into the hobby and start exploring the world of photography.

This camera can be found on eBay for anywhere between $500-800. You may even be able to find one for less on Facebook Marketplace or other local sources.

The Canon 80D was released in 2016 and was an instant hit with vlogger and influencers because it does it’s job incredibly well.

Don’t expect to shoot 4K video or have the fastest autofocus, but for the price this camera can’t be beat.

The One You Already Own

The best camera for your photography is the one you own. If all you have is a cellphone, get the most out of it. There are tons of online resources that will teach you how to get great results from a cellphone camera.

Photography is not just about the newest shiniest gear. Learning how to pose people, find unique shots, and thinking like a photographer are far more important than having the best camera.

What was your first camera? What are you currently shooting on? Let other’s know your favorite camera down below.

10 Items you NEED for cold weather winter photography

DEMOTTE, IN – Nestled in the heart of the Midwest and just lucky enough to be in proximity of notorious “lake effect”, The Region experiences some pretty blistery winters. This creates a new set of challenges for photographers that those in warm climates don’t have to deal with. That is why today I will be counting down my ten top picks of items that photographers need when doing cold weather winter photography.

DISCLAIMER: This post is not sponsored, but it does contain Amazon Affiliate links. Purchasing an item through an affiliate link does not cost you any more money to purchase, but I do earn commission on sales.

Winter photography must have items that you need

1. Camera-friendly gloves

cold weather winter photography must have items
Photo: Amazon.com

Having cold hands while shooting photos is the worst. It is very difficult to operate a camera with numb fingers, and it becomes unbearable after a while.

Keeping your hands warm while keeping free a finger or two is a game-changer when it comes to winter photography.

Get them on Amazon

2. Spare batteries

Photo by mohamed abdelghaffar on Pexels.com

It is a fact that cold weather drains batteries. Just as your car battery is more likely to die in the winter, your camera batteries will not last nearly as long in the cold as they do in summer heat.

Having spare batteries is a must when doing winter photography.

Keep your spare batteries in an insulated bag or in your pocket to keep them warm when not in use.

No matter the brand camera you use, there is almost definitely an off-brand replacement battery available on Amazon for much cheaper than the name brand. Slowly building up a stock of batteries paired with a multi-battery charger will greatly increase your efficiency as a photographer.

3. A quality camera bag

Photo: Pack Hacker

A quality camera bag that can fit all your gear, plus extras is a necessity. My favorite bag is The Jumper by Brevite. The two features that make this bag great for winter photography is its weather resistance and its packability.

This bag can fit a lot. In my bag on a shoot I keep my Canon 80D & Sigma 18 – 35, a video light, Canon 50mm f/1.8, spare batteries, Polaroid SX-70, spare film packs, batteries, charging cables, lens filters, GoPro & accessories, laptop, and a tripod.

Keeping all of my bag’s contents dry is a requirement, and this bag did not fail me when shooting in an actual blizzard.

Of course you do not have to have a Brevite bag, but make sure that whatever bag you do buy has weather resistance and can fit all of your gear.

4. Lens hood

winter photography must have tools
Photo: No Film School

A lens hood is a great item to have for winter photography for two reasons. One, it will reduce any unwanted glare from snow & ice. Two, a lens hood provides your camera an extra layer of protection from the elements.

It is important to note that most lens hoods are not universal “one-size-fits-all”. You will have to know the diameter of your lens and whether it is compatible with a hood.

5. Insulated hat

Photo: Amazon.com

Aviator, trapper hat, ushanka; whatever you call it, these hats work. Keeping warm is imperative to a successful shoot in cold winter weather. These hats are the best at keeping your head, cheeks, and ears warm and comfortable.

These hats have seen a recent rise in popularity, so you won’t have to worry about sacrificing cool for comfort. Just rock it.

Find this hat on Amazon

6. Camera weather sleeve

Photo: Amazon.com

Honestly, these are a great piece of kit to keep in your bag regardless of the time of year. They’re cheap, reusable, decent quality, and do their job.

These sleeves fit over your camera and tighten with a draw string on the body of your lens, keeping the camera’s view clear while providing weatherproofing protection to your camera.

At under $10 for a two pack, you really can’t go wrong here.

Find these camera sleeves on Amazon

7. Hand warmers

Photo: Amazon.com

Do not overlook hand warmers. These cheap and effective hand warmers active by opening the package, and will stay warm for up to 10 hours.

Keep one in your pocket to warm up your hands, or put one in your bag near your batteries to keep them warm.

Get these handwarmers on Amazon

8. Polarizing filter

Photo: PremiumBeat

Polarizer filters have a much more direct reduction of glare & reflections that lens hoods do, and also provide an extra layer of protection to your lens.

Polarizing filters also reduce haze in photos resulting in a much more saturated and clear image.

Just like lens hoods, one size does not fit all. Find the correct size for your lens online before purchasing a filter.

9. A spare insulated coat

A spare coat is always a good idea to have on hand when shooting winter photography.

You never know what may happen to your own coat that may require a quick replacement, or maybe you are shooting with someone who forgot a coat of their own.

10. Weatherproof boots & thermal socks

person wearing brown boots and blue denim jeans standing on snow

Keeping your feet warm is an integral factor in maintaining comfort while outdoors in winter weather. Investing in a good pair of weatherproof boots is a great idea even if you aren’t a photographer.

Match your boots with a thick pair of thermal socks and you’ll be good for hours.

A pro-tip is to keep a spare pair of clean, dry socks in your bag in case the ones you’re wearing get wet. Wet socks in freezing temps is not only uncomfortable, but dangerous.

Did I miss anything? Let me know what items you have in your kit for cold weather winter photography!

Family Photography Sessions: How to book & prepare for a shoot

Family photography sessions are a great reason to bring loved ones together, dress your best, and create memories that last a lifetime.

Why book a family photography session?

To answer a question with a question, how old are those family photos that are currently hanging up in dusty frames on your wall?

All jokes aside, one of the best reasons to book a family shoot is to keep the photos in your home updated and current! Don’t you want guests to see how much further dad’s hairline has receded over time? (I lied when I said “all jokes aside”). Putting new photos up on the wall is a very refreshing feeling even if it seems like a small change.

How to book a family photo session.

The the most difficult part of planning a family photography session is coordinating a date with your family.

Your best chance for booking a shoot is to find 3 dates (at least 2 months in advance) that everyone is available, and then contact your photographer to see which of those 3 dates they have available.

Once you have a date solidified with your photographer, expect a deposit of anywhere between 30 – 60% to be due at the time of booking. This is standard practice, and acts as an insurance policy for both you and your photographer should unforeseen circumstances arise.

Preparing for a family photography session.

Just as you prepare for your session, your photography prepares for family photography sessions, too. Batteries must be charged, storage cards ready, preparing any props, and blocking out the session slot are all things that a photographer must do to prepare for a shoot. My point is, the worst thing you can do is be late for your session. In fact, some photographers will charge for time spent waiting after the planned start time.

Making sure that you are not late to your photoshoot means that any outfits, makeup, etc. must be planned ahead of time and executed with good time management.

Coordinating outfits with family can be difficult, so break it down by sticking to the basics. Stay away from flashy patterns. and go with a single color for everyone to match (Neutral colors never fail).

If you have trouble with color coordination, ask your photographer what will look good in the environment the shoot will take place in.

What next?

You have picked your date, booked your shoot, and coordinated outfits with your family. There are plenty more optional steps you can take to make sure that you are ultra-ready for your shoot date.

Do you have any specific poses you would like to do? Check Pinterest for family posing ideas. Your photographer would love to know what direction you’d like to take things.

What small group photos do you want? Of course there’s going to be one big group photo of everyone, but what other groups do you want photos of? All the girls? All the guys? Father & daughter? Aunts & nieces? Make a physical list of all of the photos you’d like to have taken so nothing gets missed!

Preparing for a family photography session may seem like a lot of work, but I promise that the results will be worth it!
